Just letting everyone know about dodgy VicRoads are (yet again) with their policy on customised number plates.
When you get your car registered, you can get customised number plates - lets say EURO ones ($495).
One you pay for them you expect them to be yours, right?
Well no, if fact if you let your registration reach a status of 'EXPIRED' your screwed.
Why? Its because if you don't put them on "personal hold/reserve", someone else can pay the same amount you did initially and be issued the same plates again - so there will be 2 physical copies of the same plates.
Assuming no one has taken them, you still have to pay the initial fee of $495 to put them on another car if you haven't filled a 'vicroads' form for "holding/reserving" the plates after (I can't remember if its) 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.
So they expect people to pay for custom plates with the intention to not give a crap after their rego has expired. $_$
Solution: Extend the period to at least 5 years until made available to the public again.

Correct Oscar, but then again people still sell plates over the net and at auctions - giving them the 'right' to register their car with the chosen plates.

I guess you could pre-pay your rego 24 months in advance instead of 12 months in advance so you can ensure you don't miss the expiry date?
