does successful nominations revert back if unpaid?

hi, my query is, I used to share my car with a roommate. He was an international student and a careless driver and had few speeding, red light and parking fines. He shared his details but lately I found that he gave me wrong date of birth n licence number (via another friend). But all fines were successfully nominated to him so I thought he gave me right details. He left the country after an year permanently and never paid the fines. I keep receiving his reminders of unpaid fines but he doesn't care. Although all fines were successfully nominated to his name so should I be worried about it ? I heard from someone that if nominated person doesnt pay, it reverts back to the car owner after 5 years, true ??

What do you mean by

Do you mean that the reminders are addressed to him at your (previously) shared address? If they're addressed to him, then you may not open that mail without his permission. I would think that it's his problem so long as you made the nomination in good faith, which seems to be the case.

I can't see how a fine could possibly "revert" to another person at any stage, let alone after such a long time. They're penalties for offences which you did not commit, and it appears that has been accepted as fact by Fines Vic or whomever. You can't be penalised for someone else's actions when you had nothing to do with it.

Not true.

Thanks for replies guys.
Hardy but what if Fines Vic find out the details are incorrect, can i be held responsible for it? I trusted him to give me right details and Fines Vic accepted my nomination. The roommate (left Australia) now confessed me over phone he gave me wrong details as he had no intention come back in Australia.
Im worried because I am going to apply for citizenship soon and don't want this come under my police check/character assessment etc

Not worth worrying about things that have not actually happened.

Nope not at all, but stop opening their mail, as its an offence (unless you have permission). just return to sender.

This is not your problem.
